Concept Development and Design Alternatives

Crazy Eights

In the early ideation stage, we generated multiple fast concepts for route selection, motivation systems, social interaction, and coaching support. These sketches helped us explore different levels of complexity, playfulness, and feasibility before narrowing the concept direction.

Concept A

Name: ClimbBuddy

A social matching tool focused on finding climbing partners and building community in the gym.

Strength: Strong social value

Limitation: Less support for route progression and skill growth

Concept B

Name: RouteSpark

A beginner-friendly system that helps new users choose routes and feel more confident during early sessions.

Strength: Inclusive and beginner-focused

Limitation: Less engaging for experienced climbers

Concept C

Name: ClimbQuest

A route challenge and growth system that combines guided climbing tasks, progress tracking, and coaching feedback.

Strength: Balanced across motivation, learning, and engagement

Limitation: Requires careful interface simplification

Why We Chose ClimbQuest

We selected ClimbQuest because it best integrates the human-centred needs identified in our research. It supports beginners who need guidance, allows coaches to offer structured feedback, and adds playful motivation through progress-based interaction. Compared with the other alternatives, it offers the strongest balance between feasibility, onsite usefulness, and playful experience.

Low-Fidelity Prototype

Our low-fidelity prototype focused on a mobile-first layout with three main flows: selecting a route challenge, viewing progress rewards, and checking coaching feedback. The early design prioritised clarity, minimal text, and quick interactions that fit real climbing sessions.
